ALPINE STAWBERRIES:- from Helen Carroll
These little sweeties are easy to grow from seed. Their 8 inch tuffets make a tidy edging along my semi-shaded flowers beds and produce i/2 inch red berries all summer. Plant the seeds indoors and keep on a heating mat to germinate, the seedlings will pop up. Transfer them to 2 inch pots and grow indoors until the ground warms up a bit. In the garden they like shade from the noon sun, average garden soil and some compost. Expect some fruit in the first year, but they will hit their stride in the second year. The plants can get woody and ragged in 5 or 6 years but they are easy to replace.

Helen ate these berries from her mother's garden in England, grew them for her children, and now her 4 year old neighbour and his younger sister come to feast on them in her garden.
